Fabric Manipulation
6 hours (2 x 3 hours)
or allow more time to explore and choose 9 hours (3 x 3 hours)
Lattice and Lozenge smocking are also known as North American or Canadian Smocking. These are all names that describe traditional forms of fabric manipulation. There is so much more to this form of smocking such as Flower and Popcorn. Each pattern mysteriously works the fabric into wonderful textures. Some patterns work from top to bottom while the others work across the fabric. Some patterns look just as good on the wrong side as the right side. We will explore four very different designs and play with gage, fabric, discuss beading possibilities and garment design potential. You may recognize some of these designs from pillows that graced your mother’s or grandmother’s parlor. But crank up the fabrics, throw in some beads and you will see that this type of smocking is just as well suited to evening wear today as it is to home décor!

Surface Honeycomb Smocking
3 hour class
This wonderful little stitch is one of the original smocking stitches from days of old - before the pleater or iron-on dots. It is seldom used in our smocking today but when you know how to use it, you will marvel at what it can do. If you work it on a plaid or tartan you can vary the size of the grid and have a different look every time with the same fabric. Come and explore the possibilities and see how easy it can be! Discount will apply to tartan fabrics in stock. Kit required and short list of supplies is available upon registration.

Vertical Smocking
6 hour class
Vertical smocking is a novelty but it can lead to some very interesting effects and when employed in adult clothing or accessories, can be very sophisticated. When combined with a technique called “Strip Smocking”, it can be used where there is less fabric than we would normally use for smocking allowing you to add just a touch of stitching. Some stitches can be beaded, others layered but there are interesting effects you can create with all of them. Come and see what you can create! Supply list available upon registration.

Patternmaking for Dolls Parts I, II & III
Part I 6 hours
Part II 3 hours
Part III 3 hours
Dolls are such a popular item these days and sewing for them allows you to test a style, technique or simply make a matching outfit for your child in left over fabrics. Finding a pattern that fits a porcelain doll or antique doll is sometimes difficult, as dolls, like people, seldom come in perfect standard sizing.
In Part One of this class you will learn to make a set of basic blocks (sometimes called a sloper) to fit your precious doll. We will draft basic front and back bodices, basic pant blocks and a basic sleeve.
In part two, you will learn the basic maneuvers required to design patterns for original garments or make miniatures of your child’s garments.
Finally in part three you will bring in a design you want to make and we will draft the pattern with all your details from your design.
In these classes we will be working with the doll of your choice. However, all the same principles apply to pattern making for children. The difference is that dolls don’t grow, don’t squirm, and allow you to write on them or stick pins into them!!

Graphing your smocking
3 hours
There are several ways of designing smocking. Some people design right on graph paper; others work directly on fabric; while still others do a combination of both. But if you design on fabric, you will want to create a graph to record your work. This class is intended to help you translate the stitches from fabric to paper. We will review some of the different types of graph paper that are available and some of the styles of graphing you might see. You will be given a photo of a design to graph and then you will try graphing a design that you have stitched and brought with you. This class is a great accompaniment to the class “Build your own Design Plate”. Complete Kit Cost: $10.00
Supply list available upon registration. Some pre-class preparation required.
